Developing East Coast Low Brings High-Impact Weather to Eastern Australia
A powerful East Coast Low (ECL) is rapidly deepening off the NSW coastline today, with widespread damaging winds, localised destructive gusts, and heavy rainfall already impacting coastal and elevated areas—and it’s not over yet.
This system is now beginning to show its full force:
– Winds of 60–70 km/h with gusts exceeding 110–125 km/h are blasting the NSW coast from Forster to Wollongong, including Sydney Metro.

– Heavy rainfall totals of 70–120 mm in 6 hours are possible along the coastal fringe, raising risks of flash flooding from the Hunter to the Illawarra.
– The Scenic Rim and Main Range in QLD are bracing for damaging westerly winds overnight and into Wednesday.

– A deepening pressure gradient and tightening wind field is now generating hazardous to damaging surf, expected to carve into the coastline from Seal Rocks to Batemans Bay.

As this ECL shifts slowly south and then east into the Tasman Sea, the worst coastal impacts are expected to peak from Tuesday afternoon into early Wednesday, particularly for exposed headlands and urban fringes around Sydney.
Further inland, elevated regions including the Northern Tablelands, Scenic Rim, and lee slopes of the Great Dividing Range are also in the firing line for damaging gusts, with a marked drop in temperature and wind chill overnight.
Cold-air outbreaks are triggering widespread frost and graziers' alerts across VIC, TAS, SA and inland NSW. Icy roads and potential livestock losses are additional hazards across the south.
This is a classic winter ECL scenario, combining cold-core upper support, moist onshore flow, and rapid surface deepening—hallmarks of major east coast systems in the July window.
We’re watching the evolving structure of this low closely—a precise track will determine where the heaviest rain and strongest winds persist into Wednesday and Thursday.
If you're on the eastern seaboard, secure property, avoid coastal exposure, and prepare for flash flooding and road hazards.
